To grow TikTok followers, post 1 to 2 videos a day in one niche, hook viewers in the first seconds, and turn your best ideas into series so a new viewer has a reason to follow. TikTok shows videos to non-followers on the For You feed, so every post is a fresh chance to reach new people.
The format you pick matters more than most creators think. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, challenges had a median of 182K views and tutorials 62K, nearly three times less. Faceless videos beat one person on camera, 114K to 67K. The rest of this playbook turns patterns like these into steps you can use this week.

How does TikTok decide who sees your videos?
TikTok opens on the For You feed, a personalized stream that mostly shows accounts the viewer doesn't follow yet, whether they use the app or the TikTok website. A separate Following feed shows accounts they already follow. That is why a small account can reach thousands of people with one video: reach depends on how viewers react to that video, not on your follower count.
In practice, a new video goes to a first group of viewers and travels further when they react well. The signals to design for:
- Watch time and completion: viewers who stay to the end show the video delivered on its hook.
- Rewatches: loops and dense, fast videos get watched twice.
- Shares and saves: the clearest sign a video is useful or funny enough to pass on.
- Comments: questions and debates keep a video in circulation.
- Profile visits and follows: the signal that turns one viral video into an audience.
In the US, the system is also changing. TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, established on January 23, 2026, runs TikTok in the US and will retrain, test and update the recommendation algorithm on US user data. Judge your strategy on your own analytics, not on last year's rules of thumb.
Choose one niche and 3 or 4 content pillars
People follow when they can predict what the next video will be. Pick one audience and 3 or 4 recurring pillars. A fitness account might run workout demos, form fixes, cheap high-protein meals and gym humor. A SaaS founder might run build-in-public updates, customer problems, product demos and founder lessons.
Decision rule: if an idea fits none of your pillars, post it as a test, not a habit. If a test beats your average twice, promote it to a pillar.
Topic also sets your ceiling. In Revid's analysis of 2,377,477 TikToks across 46 hashtag themes, couples videos averaged 2.4M views per video versus 332.2k for crypto, a 7.3x gap (love beats money on TikTok). You don't need to change niches, but angles about relationships, identity and everyday emotion travel further than pure information.
Which TikTok formats get the most views?
Revid's study of what makes a TikTok go viral grouped 176,367 TikToks by format with AI analysis. Challenges led with a 182K median (25.6% passed 1M views), then comedy at 155K (22%), reactions at 105K (16%), dance at 84K, storytelling at 66K (12.2%) and tutorials at 62K (12.1%). The sample only includes videos that already reached 1,000+ likes, so these figures show what strong videos have in common, not guaranteed causes.
Challenges and comedy passed 1M views about twice as often as tutorials and storytelling, which are the most common formats.

Show the data
| Median views | Share that passed 1M views | |
|---|---|---|
| Challenge | 182.3K | 25.6% |
| Comedy | 154.8K | 22.1% |
| Reaction | 104.8K | 16% |
| Dance | 83.8K | 15.5% |
| Storytelling | 66.1K | 12.2% |
| Lip Sync | 61.7K | 12.3% |
| Tutorial | 61.9K | 12.1% |
How you film changes the numbers too. Faceless videos had a 114K median and 17.4% passed 1M views, versus 67K and 12.7% for one person on camera. Faceless tutorials reached a 156K median against 52K for on-camera tutorials. POV shots had a 107K median while selfie-style videos had 48K.
Decision rule: if you teach, show the screen, your hands or the process instead of your face talking to the lens. If your niche suits it, a challenge or a comedic take on a common problem is the highest-ceiling format to test first.

Make a 25-second vertical TikTok for desk workers with stiff shoulders. Open with the on-screen text "Stop stretching like this if your shoulders hurt" over the most striking frame, then show three quick hand and body demos with minimal narration. Use fast cuts, bold captions and an upbeat sound, and end with "Save this for your next meeting."
How do you hook viewers in the first seconds?
Less talking tends to win. Videos with under 40 characters of speech had a 123K median and 20.2% passed 1M views. Videos talking throughout (300+ characters of speech) had 68K and 11.9%, and silent videos 73K. Put the hook on screen as text, open on the most interesting frame, and cut every word that delays the point.
Hook templates to adapt:
- "Stop doing [common habit] if you want [result]."
- "The [niche] mistake nobody warns you about."
- "POV: you just [relatable moment]."
- "Watch what happens when [unexpected action]."
- "I tried [popular advice] so you don't have to."
Emotion matters more than polish. In the same data, outrage had a 156K median and humor 121K, while inspirational videos had the lowest median at 45K. For more openers by niche, use these copy-paste TikTok hooks.

Create Part 1 of a 3-part TikTok series called "Cheap weeknight recipes for students": a 30-second vertical video showing a 3-euro pasta dish step by step, filmed from above with only hands and pan visible. Hook with on-screen text "Dinner for 3 euros in 10 minutes", keep narration short with captions, and end on "Part 2: the sauce that changes everything. Follow so you don't miss it."

How do you turn viewers into followers?
A view becomes a follow only when your profile promises more of the same. Most creators lose people at the profile visit: the viewer taps through, sees unrelated videos and no clear promise, and leaves.
- Write a one-line bio that names who it's for and what they get, such as "Cheap weeknight recipes for students, a new one daily."
- Pin the videos that best explain the account: your top performer and one that states what you post.
- Build series. Label them "Part 1" and end on an open question, so the follow button is the way to get the answer.
- Use a follow call to action only when it's true: "Follow for part 2" works when part 2 is coming.
- Keep covers consistent so the grid reads as one show. TikTok recommends 9:16 at 1080x1920 pixels.
How often should you post on TikTok?
TikTok publishes no ideal posting frequency, so treat this table as a starting point, not a rule:
| Stage | Followers | Starting cadence | Focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | Under 5,000 | 1 to 2 videos a day | Test formats and hooks fast |
| Growth | 5,000 to 50,000 | 1 to 2 a day, with 1 recurring series | Double down on proven formats |
| Established | 50,000+ | 2 to 3 a day if quality holds | Series, community, repurposing |
Set expectations for the early stage: Socialinsider's 2026 study found TikTok accounts under 5,000 followers averaged 350 views per video. Volume helps because each post is another test, but if views per video fall as you post more, cut back and spend the time on hooks.
To keep up the pace, break longer videos into shorter clips. TikTok accepts uploads up to 60 minutes, but short, self-contained clips are easier to finish and share.
When is the best time to post on TikTok?
In Revid's data on English-language TikToks (times converted to US Eastern), posts at 4 a.m. had the highest median, 120K views, and 19.9% passed 1M. The best window was 3 to 6 a.m. and the weakest 5 to 9 p.m., with 7 p.m. lowest at 50K. Saturday had the best median (70K), Sunday the highest share past 1M views (13.6%), and weekdays sat between 63K and 65K.
Read this carefully: these creators post from around the world, so early US hours also cover daytime in the UK, Europe, India and Asia. Your own audience is the better guide. In TikTok Studio, the Followers tab breaks follower activity down by hours and days, and the Viewers tab shows when viewers were most active over the last 7 days.
How many hashtags should you use, and what should the caption say?
Use 3 to 4 relevant hashtags. In Revid's data, videos with 4 hashtags had the best median (77K views, 13.4% past 1M) and 3 hashtags had 75K. No hashtags dropped to 51K (9.8%), and 9 or more hashtags fell to 16K (7.8%).
Posts with 3 or 4 hashtags earned the most views. Captions stuffed with 9 or more hashtags did worst of all, with median views cut by about 80%.

| None | 51.1K | 9.8% |
| 1 | 64K | 11.8% |

| 3 | 75.4K | 13.1% |

| 5 | 67.3K | 12.1% |
| 6 to 8 | 71.8K | 12.7% |
| 9+ | 15.6K | 7.8% |
Write a short caption rather than none. Captions of 41 to 80 characters had the best median (67K, 12.5% past 1M), while videos with no caption had 36K (7.5%). A working recipe is one line of context plus one broad tag, two specific tags and one trend tag:
"Desk stretch for stiff shoulders, save it for later #stretching #deskjob #officelife #mobility"
Pick the trend tag from trending TikTok hashtags only when it genuinely fits, and check viral TikTok songs for a sound your niche is already using.
How do you build a community that shares your videos?
- Reply to comments with a video reply. A good question becomes your next post, and the commenter has a reason to share it.
- End with a specific question ("Which one would you pick?") instead of "Let me know your thoughts."
- Use Duets and Stitches to join conversations in your niche. They don't count as original content for Creator Rewards, so mix them with original videos.
- Go LIVE once you qualify: TikTok requires you to be at least 18 with 1,000 followers (the threshold may vary by region).
Which TikTok metrics show real growth?
Find your numbers in TikTok Studio (profile, menu, TikTok Studio, Analytics, View all), in the TikTok Studio app, or on TikTok's website through Studio Web. Compare date ranges of 7, 28, 60 or 365 days.
| Metric | What it tells you | If it's low, do this |
|---|---|---|
| Average watch time | How long viewers stay | Cut the intro, show the payoff sooner |
| Completion rate | Whether the video kept its promise | Shorten, or tighten the middle |
| Shares per view | Whether it's worth passing on | Add a takeaway, a twist or a joke |
| Profile visits and follows | Whether the account looks worth following | Fix the bio, pin videos, start a series |
| Views from For You | Reach beyond your followers | Test new hooks and formats |
For a benchmark, across Revid's 176,367-video sample likes equaled 7.1% of views, shares 0.88% and comments 0.08%. Socialinsider's 2026 study put TikTok's average engagement rate by followers at 2.60%, versus 0.45% for Instagram Reels and 0.30% for YouTube Shorts (see sourced YouTube Shorts statistics). How to make more TikToks with Revid
Revid helps when the bottleneck is producing enough strong videos to test.
- Search Revid's library of about 2.77 million short-form videos by topic and engagement, open one that worked in your niche, and choose "Make it about your topic" to remix a proven viral format into an original video.
- Or paste a script or a link into the AI TikTok video generator to get a vertical voice-over video with synced captions.
- Adjust scenes in the timeline editor, then publish or schedule directly to TikTok.
- Check each post's views, likes and comments in Revid and remix the ones that did well.
If a video contains realistic AI visuals or audio, turn on TikTok's AI-generated content label. TikTok says the label does not affect distribution for videos that follow its Community Guidelines.
Should you buy TikTok followers?
No. Follower services sell accounts that never watch your videos, so your follower count rises while views, completion and engagement per follower fall. Those are exactly the numbers you need to grow. TikTok's Community Guidelines also prohibit fake engagement, and Creator Rewards only pays on qualified views, which exclude fraudulent, paid and artificial views. Every hour spent on bought growth is better spent on a stronger hook.
FAQ
How many followers do you need to make money on TikTok?
The Creator Rewards Program needs 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, a Personal account and an age of at least 18. Only original videos of at least one minute, posted after joining, can earn. In the US, TikTok Shop affiliates need 1,000 followers.
Does TikTok limit how many hashtags you can use?
TikTok has no verified per-post hashtag cap; the 5-hashtag limit applies to Instagram. On TikTok, 3 to 4 relevant hashtags performed best in Revid's data, and 9 or more performed worst.
Do you have to show your face to grow on TikTok?
No. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks, faceless videos had a higher median than one person on camera (114K versus 67K views), and animal videos reached 147K.
Does labeling a video as AI-generated hurt its reach?
No. TikTok says turning on the AI-generated content label does not affect a video's distribution if it follows the Community Guidelines. Labeling is required for realistic AI images, audio or video.
Can you go LIVE on TikTok with under 1,000 followers?
Usually not. TikTok requires 1,000 followers and an age of at least 18 to go LIVE, though the follower threshold may vary by region.
