How Long Can Instagram Reels Be in 2026? Limits and Best Length
Instagram Reels can run up to 20 minutes, but only Reels of 3 minutes or less are recommended to new viewers. Here are the exact limits and the best length for each type of Reel.

On this page
Instagram Reels can be up to 20 minutes long when you record and edit them in the Instagram app. Reels longer than 3 minutes are not recommended to people who don't follow you, so if you want reach, keep a Reel at 3 minutes or less. Most ideas fit in 15 to 90 seconds.
That gap between the upload limit and the recommendation limit is where most creators lose views. A 4-minute tutorial uploads without any warning, then quietly reaches only your existing followers. The length you can post and the length Instagram will show to strangers are two different numbers, and a third one, how long viewers will actually watch, matters more than either.

How long can an Instagram Reel be in 2026?
Here are the limits that apply today:
| Limit | Length | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum in the Instagram app | 20 minutes | You can record and edit a Reel up to 20 minutes long |
| Recommended to non-followers | 3 minutes or less | Longer Reels are shown mainly to people who already follow you |
| Published through Instagram's API | 3 seconds to 15 minutes, up to 300 MB | Applies when a scheduling tool posts the Reel for you |
The 20-minute ceiling is the current in-app limit, and Instagram's Reels feature page describes Reels as its format for short and longer videos alike. The recommendation rule is the one that shapes strategy: since January 21, 2025, Reels up to 3 minutes can be recommended to non-followers. Before that date, only Reels up to 90 seconds were.
That history is why so much advice still quotes 60 or 90 seconds as the maximum. Both numbers are outdated. If you want the full sequence of earlier caps, Moonb's Reel length timeline walks through them.

Can you post a 3-minute Reel on Instagram?
Yes. A 3-minute Reel is allowed, and it is the longest length Instagram still recommends to people who don't follow you. Instagram's rule targets Reels longer than 3 minutes, so export slightly under 3 minutes rather than right on the line, because an intro card or end screen added late in the edit can push you over.
Past 3 minutes, the Reel still posts and still plays for followers, but discovery mostly stops. Socialinsider's analysis of Reel length found that Reels longer than 3 minutes are generally not placed in the Reels tab and are shown mainly to existing followers.
How length plays out across Instagram's surfaces:
| Surface | Under 90 seconds | 90 seconds to 3 minutes | Over 3 minutes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reels tab | Strongest fit for reaching new viewers | Still eligible, a slower watch for cold viewers | Generally not placed here |
| Main feed | Visible to followers | Works well for follower-facing content | Where long Reels mostly live |
| Explore | Can reach cold audiences when retention is strong | Less predictable | Weak fit for discovery |
How to make a Reel longer than 90 seconds
If your app still stops you at 90 seconds, the limit is not Instagram's current rule. Try these in order:
- Update the Instagram app. Longer Reels need a current version, and features can reach accounts gradually.
- Make sure you are creating a Reel, not a Story. Stories have their own, much shorter limits (see our Instagram Stories length guide).
- Record in segments or import a longer clip from your camera roll, then trim in the Reels editor. The in-app limit is 20 minutes.
- Edit outside the app if you prefer. Edits, Instagram's standalone editor for Android and iPhone, adds generated captions and exports without a watermark.
- Check your scheduling tool. Tools that publish through Instagram's API are capped at 15 minutes, so a 16-minute file will fail there even though the app accepts it.
Whatever length you land on, keep it at 3 minutes or less if you want it in front of new viewers.
How long should an Instagram Reel be?
For most accounts, 45 to 60 seconds is the best default, 15 to 30 seconds suits quick single-beat ideas, and 90 seconds to 3 minutes is worth it only when the extra time adds steps, proof or story.
The strongest public benchmark points the same way. In a 2026 analysis summarized in Influencer Marketing Hub's Instagram Reels stats, 45 to 60 second Reels had the highest engagement rate (0.35%), 90 to 120 second Reels still averaged 0.30%, and Reels longer than 180 seconds dropped to 0.15%. The same summary describes a separate analysis with a U-shaped pattern, where Reels under 1 minute and over 3 minutes both beat the 2 to 3 minute band.
Audience surveys agree on the ceiling. In Sprout Social's 2026 Content Strategy Report, 52% of social media users said they are most likely to interact with short-form video under 60 seconds on Instagram, and only 19% favored videos longer than 60 seconds (more sourced figures in our short-form video statistics).
Length matters less than most creators think, though, once a video is good enough to get traction. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, every length bucket from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes had a median between 58K and 76K views. Videos of 61 to 90 seconds had a 70K median; videos under 15 seconds had the lowest median (58K) but the most shares per view (1.41 per 100). This is TikTok data, and the sample only includes videos that already passed 1,000 likes, so it shows what successful videos have in common rather than what causes success. Our full study of what makes TikToks go viral has the method.
Length alone barely moves views: every bucket lands between 58K and 76K median views (the 790 videos over 10 minutes are a small, unusual group). Clips under 15 seconds get shared the most per view.

| 31 to 60 s | 61.8K | 11.8% | 1 |

Revid's full TikTok index (about 2.39 million TikToks with 1,000+ likes, all posting dates) tells an older story: 16 to 30 second videos had the highest median, about 141K views. For recent posts, that edge for very short videos has faded. The practical reading for Reels: pick the length the idea needs, not the shortest one you can force it into.
Prompt to try
Create a 60-second vertical tutorial Reel showing how to brew pour-over coffee at home in 4 steps. Open with the hook "Your coffee tastes bitter because of one mistake", then show each step with on-screen text, and end with the finished cup. Clean, warm kitchen visuals with a calm, friendly voiceover.
Best Reel length by content type
| Content type | Recommended length | Main signal to earn | Why this length fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trend and audio-led Reels | 15 to 30 seconds | Completion and rewatches | The idea lands in one beat; extra setup weakens the loop |
| Tutorials and how-tos | 45 to 90 seconds | Saves and watch time | One lesson needs room for context, steps and the result |
| Product demos and reviews | 60 to 120 seconds | Saves and profile visits | Viewers need the problem, the product in use and a verdict |
| Storytelling and day-in-the-life | 90 to 180 seconds | Shares and comments | A story needs scenes and a turn before the payoff |
| In-depth educational analysis | Over 3 minutes, only for warm audiences | Follows and long watch sessions | Works when followers already trust your expertise, not for discovery |
A simple rule: match the runtime to the viewer's question. "What happened?" or "What's the joke?" can be answered fast. "How do I do this?" or "Is this worth buying?" needs more frames, examples and clear sequencing.
For audio-led Reels, listen to the full sound before you cut. If you need the track as a file to plan the edit, Vocuno's Instagram Reels audio downloader extracts it, and hearing the whole sound makes it obvious whether the idea is a quick loop or a paced explainer.
Why the 2 to 3 minute range is the riskiest
The middle band asks for more attention than a quick clip but often delivers less than a real tutorial. The usual failure is a 2-minute Reel built around one idea that would have landed in 40 seconds: too long to feel effortless, too thin to feel worth the time.
If a Reel sits in this range, check value density. Every scene should add new information, proof or a turn in the story. If you can remove a scene and the point still lands, remove it.
Short loop to try
Make a 20-second looping Reel about the fastest way to fold a fitted sheet. Open on the perfectly folded sheet, give one line of context, show the three quick moves, and end on a frame that loops back to the start. Bright, upbeat style with bold captions.
How to structure a Reel for each length
Decide the length band before you shoot. Shot count, caption density and pacing all change between a loop and a multi-step explanation.

- 15 to 30 seconds: open on the outcome or the most active visual, give one line of context, and end on a frame that loops back into the first.
- 45 to 60 seconds: state the claim or promised result first, add one proof point, step or contrast, then resolve it clearly enough that the viewer can act on it or share it.
- 90 seconds to 3 minutes: plan in chapters. Open with the claim, deliver an early proof section, shift in the middle, and conclude before the close. Use on-screen text and visual resets so viewers always know where they are.
Keep captions and key text clear of Instagram's buttons and caption overlay; our Instagram Reels safe zone checker shows exactly where. For a cross-platform view of length, see video length by platform, and for feed videos and Stories, how long an Instagram video should be.
Make Reels at the right length with Revid
If you want to test lengths without re-filming, Revid's AI Reel generator turns an idea, script or link into a vertical Reel with script, visuals, AI voice-over, synced captions and music. Set a short cut and a longer cut from the same idea, adjust pacing scene by scene in the timeline editor, and export in 1080p or 4K at 30 or 60 fps. If you already have long footage, the long video to short video converter cuts it into captioned clips you can keep under the 3-minute mark. You can then publish or schedule the Reels to Instagram directly from Revid and compare their views in one place.

FAQ
Is there a time limit on Instagram Reels?
Yes. The in-app limit is 20 minutes, and Reels longer than 3 minutes are not recommended to non-followers. Reels posted by third-party tools through Instagram's API are capped at 15 minutes.
Is there a minimum length for an Instagram Reel?
The only documented minimum is 3 seconds, for Reels published through Instagram's API. In practice, a Reel should be long enough to land one complete idea.
Do longer Reels get fewer views?
Only past 3 minutes is length a hard reach limit, because those Reels are shown mainly to followers. Under 3 minutes, a longer Reel loses views when it stretches a simple idea, not because of the length itself.
Are Facebook Reels limited to 20 minutes too?
No. Since a June 2025 change, every new Facebook video is shared as a reel, and Facebook says reels have no length or format restrictions.
How long can Instagram Stories be compared to Reels?
Much shorter. Story videos published through Instagram's API can be 3 to 60 seconds long, while Reels go up to 20 minutes in the app.
