Video Length Best Practices: Ideal Lengths by Platform (2026)

The ideal social media video length by platform and goal, the hard limits that change reach and earnings, and what Revid's data on 176,367 TikToks says about length.

Video length best practices come down to one rule: make each video the shortest length that fully delivers one idea. Start at 15 to 30 seconds for awareness, 30 to 60 seconds for education and 15 to 45 seconds for conversion on TikTok, Reels and Shorts, and keep Reels and Shorts under 3 minutes.

Length on its own barely separates winners from losers. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, every length bucket from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes had a median between 58K and 76K views. What does change results is a handful of hard thresholds: TikTok only pays Creator Rewards on videos of 1 minute or more, Instagram stops recommending Reels over 3 minutes to non-followers, and a YouTube Short over 1 minute with a Content ID claim is blocked worldwide.

How long should a social media video be? Benchmarks by platform and goal

The table below is Revid's editorial starting point, not a platform rule. Each range is where an idea of that type usually fits without padding. Treat it as the first version you test, then let your own retention data move it.

PlatformAwarenessEducationConversion
TikTok15 to 30 s30 to 60 s20 to 45 s
Instagram Reels15 to 30 s30 to 60 s15 to 30 s
YouTube Shorts20 to 35 s35 to 60 s20 to 40 s
Feed video (Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Instagram feed)10 to 20 s20 to 60 s15 to 45 s

Two decision rules sit on top of the table:

  • If you can say it in 20 seconds, post 20 seconds. Extra time only helps when every added beat gives the viewer something new.
  • If you are in TikTok's Creator Rewards Program, push educational videos just past 1 minute. Shorter videos earn nothing from the program, and Revid's data shows 61 to 90 second TikToks hold their own (more below).

For awareness, use one hook and one payoff. For education, add structure (numbered steps, on-screen labels) so the extra seconds feel earned. For conversion, lead with the value, show proof fast and make the next step obvious. Revid's companion piece on the best AI video length per platform goes further on AI-generated formats.

Maximums are rarely the right target, but they decide what you can post and where long cuts lose reach.

What Revid's data says about the optimal TikTok video length

In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, median views stayed between 58K and 76K in every length bucket from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes. Videos of 61 to 90 seconds reached a 70K median. Clips under 15 seconds had the lowest median (58K) but the most shares per view: 1.41 shares per 100 views. The full method is in Revid's study of what makes a TikTok go viral.

Length alone barely moves views: every bucket lands between 58K and 76K median views (the 790 videos over 10 minutes are a small, unusual group). Clips under 15 seconds get shared the most per view.

Revid's full TikTok index tells a different story because it covers all posting dates. Across about 2.39 million TikToks with 1,000+ likes, 16 to 30 second videos had the highest median views (about 141K), ahead of 31 to 60 seconds (120K), under 15 seconds (106K) and 61 to 90 seconds (102K). The same index shows 32% of 2025 posts ran over one minute, up from 22% of 2023 posts (short-form video statistics). Both results hold for their samples: the edge of very short videos has faded for recent posts.

The extreme tail still leans short. Among the 1,588 TikToks with over 100 million views, the median length is 22 seconds and 59% run 30 seconds or less (the 100M Club).

Keep the limits in mind. These samples only include TikToks that already reached 1,000+ likes, so they show what successful videos have in common, not what causes success. Use them for Reels or Shorts strategy only as TikTok data.

The practical reading: for recent TikToks, length is no longer a reason to cut a good 75-second explainer down to 25 seconds. Cut it only if the shorter version loses nothing.

TikTok video length best practices

What TikTok's own rules say about length

TikTok's support pages set limits rather than one ideal duration:

  • Uploads can run up to 60 minutes. The in-app camera records up to 10 minutes.
  • The Creator Rewards Program pays only on videos at least 1 minute long, posted after you join. Eligibility also requires 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days.
  • Rewards are paid on qualified For You feed views, which exclude views under 5 seconds. A hook that loses people in the first seconds costs you money as well as reach.

Make a 70-second TikTok tutorial on brewing pour-over coffee at home. Open on the finished cup with the line 'Your coffee tastes bitter because of one mistake.' Walk through 5 numbered steps with on-screen labels, change the visual every few seconds, and use bold synced captions for sound-off viewers.

When longer TikToks work

Longer TikToks work when the topic creates curiosity and keeps paying it off: storytime, structured opinion pieces, tutorials where each step matters, and niche education. They fail when the payoff arrives late. Show the outcome in the first 2 to 3 seconds, cut pauses and slow intros, change the visual every few seconds, and add captions for sound-off viewing. If the opening line is weak, borrow a structure from these TikTok hook examples.

Instagram Reels and Stories length

Reels can be up to 20 minutes, but only Reels of 3 minutes or less are recommended to people who don't follow you. Instagram raised that cutoff from 90 seconds to 3 minutes on January 21, 2025, so older advice to stay under 90 seconds is out of date.

In practice, Reels reward tight, single-takeaway edits. Use 15 to 30 seconds for reach and promos, and 30 to 45 seconds as a strong middle ground for educational Reels. Hook with movement or a bold claim, structure the idea with text overlays, and trim repeated phrases. For Stories, keep each video within the 3 to 60 second range and split longer content across several stories. Revid's guide to Instagram Reels length covers the limits in more detail.

Create a 45-second YouTube Short that answers one question: why do airplane windows have a tiny hole? Hook with 'There is a hole in every plane window, and it keeps you safe.' Use clean close-up visuals, short captions and a single clear payoff at the end, with no licensed music.

YouTube Shorts length best practices

Since October 15, 2024, square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes count as Shorts. The rules from 2025 still apply in 2026:

  • Under 1 minute if you use claimed audio. Any Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim is blocked worldwide and can't be monetized.
  • Music caps: most Shorts Audio Library songs can run up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short; some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.
  • Length by goal: 20 to 35 seconds for highlights and curiosity hooks, 35 to 60 seconds for explainers and comparisons, 20 to 40 seconds for clips that send viewers to long-form.

Shorts viewers often arrive in a learning mindset, so a 40 to 60 second Short that answers one question cleanly is a safe format for education channels. For full-length uploads, see the guide to the best YouTube video length.

Feed video length: Facebook, LinkedIn and X

Feed placements compete with photos, carousels and text, and many people watch without sound. Use 10 to 20 seconds to stop the scroll, 20 to 60 seconds for updates and mini explainers, and 15 to 45 seconds for offers. Put the message in the first frame and add text overlays.

Platform notes:

  • Facebook: since June 2025, every new video is shared as a reel, with no length or format restriction. Your length is a creative choice, not a technical one.
  • LinkedIn: videos can run up to 15 minutes. The full-screen vertical video feed is mobile-only, and any video you post may appear there based on relevance and performance, so a vertical cut is worth making. Practical B2B content can run longer if the first seconds prove relevance.
  • X: up to 20 minutes for standard accounts and 125 minutes with Premium.

How video length affects retention and completion rate

Shorter videos usually show higher completion because there are fewer seconds in which to lose a viewer. Vidyard's 2024 benchmark found that when a business video is under 1 minute, 65% of viewers stay to the end, compared with 20% for videos over 20 minutes (Vidyard business video benchmarks).

Longer videos can still win on total watch time. A 45-second Short that holds attention gives the platform more watch time than a weak 15-second clip. Marketers lean toward that middle ground: 71% in Wyzowl's 2026 survey said videos between 30 seconds and 2 minutes are the most effective length.

When retention drops, length is rarely the root cause. Look for:

  • slow intros before the point
  • repetitive wording
  • the same shot held too long
  • the payoff saved for the end
  • more than one idea in a single video

Judge length with several numbers together: the retention curve by second, average watch time, completion rate by format, and saves, shares, clicks or sales. A 50-second tutorial with lower completion but more saves is doing its job.

How to find the optimal video length for your audience

Benchmarks get you a first version. Your own data picks the final length.

  1. Choose one idea with a clear hook.
  2. Make 3 versions at different lengths, for example 15, 30 and 45 seconds.
  3. Publish them under similar conditions: same weekday and time window, same caption style.
  4. Compare retention, average watch time and downstream actions after the same number of days.
  5. Keep the winner, then repeat with a new topic and on each platform separately.

On Instagram, trial reels make this cleaner: they are shown first to non-followers and don't affect the ranking of your standard reels (you need a public account with at least 200 followers on a professional account, or 1,000 on a personal one). On TikTok, check the Viewers and Followers tabs in TikTok Studio analytics. Since posting time skews results, keep it constant; Publora's roundup of the best time to post on social media is a reasonable place to pick your window.

How to make several cutdowns with Revid

Testing lengths means producing variants, and rebuilding each one by hand is where most tests die. With Revid:

  1. Paste a long video or a YouTube link into the long video to short video converter to get vertical clips, or write a script in the short video maker for a new video.
  2. Make the short and long versions from the same idea: a tighter script gives a shorter video, and the timeline editor lets you trim scenes by hand.
  3. Revid adds the voice-over and synced captions; export in 720p, 1080p or 4K.
  4. Publish or schedule each version to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube from one queue. Revid reports the views, likes and comments of every post, so you can compare cutdowns side by side.

Common mistakes when choosing video length

  • Posting the same cut everywhere. A Short with claimed music, a Reel past 3 minutes and a TikTok just under 1 minute each break a different platform rule.
  • Keeping a weak intro. If the value starts at second 5, most short-form viewers never see it.
  • Saying too much. One video, one main point. Extra ideas create drop-off.
  • Judging only by views. A high view count with weak retention tells you little about whether the length worked.
  • Padding to hit a target. Stretching a 30-second idea to 61 seconds for Creator Rewards only pays if retention holds.

FAQ

Should ads be shorter than organic videos?

Usually, yes: start most social video ads at 15 to 30 seconds. Ads have less built-in viewer intent, so they need to show the value fast; longer ads can work for warm audiences or offers that need explaining.

Do longer TikToks get more views?

Not reliably. In Revid's 12-month sample of TikToks with 1,000+ likes, median views stayed between 58K and 76K across all lengths, so a longer video only wins when its pacing holds attention.

How long can AI-generated video clips be?

Usually only a few seconds per clip. Google's Veo 3.1 generates 4, 6 or 8-second clips in the Gemini API; check each tool's documentation, including Vidu's, for its current limit. Tools like Revid assemble several generated scenes into one longer video.

Is completion rate the most important metric?

No. Read it alongside watch time, retention by second, saves, shares and clicks; a short video with high completion and no action is often worth less than a longer one that drives results.

Should every platform get a different edit?

Ideally, yes. TikTok, Reels, Shorts and feed placements reward different pacing and have different length thresholds, so make at least one cut per major platform and adjust the hook, captions and duration for each.
