How to Create Engaging Social Media Content That Converts in 2026

An eight-step playbook for social media content that gets comments, shares and clicks, not just likes. It covers hooks, formats, platform fit, captions, systems and metrics, backed by Revid's analysis of 176,367 viral TikToks.

How to Create Engaging Social Media Content That Converts
On this page

To create engaging social media content, open every post with a hook that stops the scroll and use a format the platform already rewards. Deliver one clear payoff and end with a specific ask: a comment, a save, a share or a click. Then measure the actions that lead to customers, not likes, and remake the posts that work.

The format you choose matters more than most advice admits. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, challenges had a median of 182K views and tutorials had 62K. That is the same platform and the same engagement bar, with nearly triple the views. Most engagement tips skip this choice entirely and jump to posting schedules.

What makes social media content engaging?

Engagement is any action a viewer takes beyond scrolling past: watching to the end, liking, commenting, sharing, saving, clicking or sending a DM. Feeds rank posts partly on these signals. A post that earns real interaction gets shown to more people, and a post that earns only a glance stops being distributed.

These actions are not equal. A like takes a fraction of a second. A comment, a share to a friend or a DM asking about price takes intent, and those deeper actions are the ones that predict sales.

Audiences are also tired of polished, generic posts. In Clutch's October 2025 survey of U.S. consumers, 44% said they prefer casual, authentic videos from independent creators over polished brand spots. Sprout Social research published in March 2026 found that 50% of Gen Z have blocked, muted or unfollowed a brand or creator because their content felt like "AI slop". More sourced figures like these are on our short-form video statistics page.

Step 1: Decide who the post is for and what it should make them do

Before you make anything, write two lines: who the post is for, and the one action you want from them. For example: "First-time Shopify store owners. Save this checklist for your next product launch." If you can't fill in both lines, the post will drift toward generic.

Match the action to your goal:

GoalAction to ask forFormats that fit
Reach new peopleSharesComedy, relatable moments, surprising facts, challenges
Build trustSaves and commentsTutorials, checklists, opinions, behind the scenes
Drive salesClicks and DMsDemos, before and after, customer stories, offers

Decision rule: if a post has no clear action, it is filler. Cut it or give it one.

Prompt to try

Make a 30-second vertical video for first-time Shopify store owners that opens with the hook "Stop launching products without this checklist." Show three quick launch checks as big, short text overlays over product close-ups and screen recordings, with a tight voice-over. End by asking viewers to save the video for their next launch.

Run it in Revid

Step 2: Write the hook first

The opening line or frame decides whether anyone sees the rest. In Clutch's October 2025 survey, 88% of U.S. consumers said a video needs to grab their attention in 30 seconds or less, and only 9% said they give short-form videos their full attention. Write the hook before the body, not after.

Hook patterns that work on any platform, with examples you can adapt:

  • Mistake: "Stop writing captions like this."
  • Contrarian: "Posting every day is why your account isn't growing."
  • Outcome first: "This is the cold email that landed our first customers."
  • Curiosity list: "Three things nobody tells you before opening a coffee shop."
  • POV: "POV: your client says 'just make it pop'."

For more, copy from our list of TikTok hooks that stop the scroll; most work on Reels and Shorts too.

Talk less than you think. In Revid's TikTok data, videos with under 40 characters of speech had a 123K median and 20.2% passed 1 million views, while videos talking throughout had a 68K median. Emotion matters too: outrage had a 156K median and humor 121K, against 45K for inspirational content. Let the visual carry the hook, keep the voice-over tight, and aim for a feeling stronger than "nice".

Step 3: Choose a format that already gets watched

Pick the format before the topic. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks, challenges led with a 182K median (25.6% passed 1 million views), followed by comedy at 155K, reactions at 105K, dance at 84K, storytelling at 66K and tutorials at 62K. This sample only holds videos that already reached 1,000+ likes, so it shows what top performers have in common, not what causes views. The full method is in our study of what makes a TikTok go viral.

You don't need to show your face. Faceless TikToks had a 114K median against 67K for one person on camera. The gap is widest for tutorials: 156K for faceless tutorials against 52K on camera. Screen recordings (91K median) also beat selfie-style footage (48K). For a business, that means a screen-recorded walkthrough or a product close-up with a voice-over is often a stronger bet than talking to the camera.

Marketers see the same pull toward humor: in HubSpot's 2026 research, 48% said funny content yields the highest ROI among short-form content types. If your brand can carry a joke, make that a pillar.

Step 4: Fit each platform's culture and features

Use one idea across several platforms, but rebuild it for each one. Each network rewards a different kind of post and offers native features that cost nothing to use.

PlatformWhat earns engagementNative features to useRule to respect
InstagramReels, carousels, StoriesTrial reels, Stories, carousels of up to 20 itemsUp to 5 hashtags per post; reels over 3 minutes aren't recommended to non-followers

For LinkedIn, Lumeo's overview of the content types that work on LinkedIn is a useful starting list.

Set benchmarks per platform, because averages differ a lot. Socialinsider's 2026 study of 69 million short-form videos found an average engagement rate by followers of 2.60% for TikTok, 0.45% for Instagram Reels and 0.30% for YouTube Shorts. Comments followed the same order: 50 per video on TikTok, 20 on Reels and 10 on Shorts. For small accounts, the same study found that Shorts averaged 15,160 views per video for accounts under 5,000 followers, against 625 on Reels and 350 on TikTok. The YouTube Shorts statistics page collects more figures like these.

Step 5: Write captions that start conversations

A caption has two jobs: add context the video can't, and give people an easy reason to reply. Closed questions get one-word answers or none. Open, specific questions get stories.

Instead ofAsk
"Do you like our new product?""Which feature would you use first, and for what?"
"Thoughts?""What's the worst advice you got when you started?"
"Link in bio!""Comment 'guide' and we'll send you the checklist."

Keep captions short but present. In Revid's TikTok data, captions of 41 to 80 characters had the best median (67K views), and posts with no caption had 36K. Three sample captions in that range:

  • "The setting that fixed our blurry Reels. Which one did you miss?"
  • "We tried this pricing page for a month. Would you click it?"
  • "Save this before your next launch. What would you add?"

On hashtags, TikToks with 4 hashtags had the best median (77K views) and 3 hashtags had 75K, against 51K with none and only 16K with 9 or more. Instagram now caps posts at 5 hashtags. Use a few specific tags, not a wall of them. The free Instagram caption generator gives you drafts to edit.

Then answer comments, especially early ones. A reply turns a one-off comment into a thread, and threads are the deep engagement you want.

Step 6: Make scroll-stopping visuals without design skills

You don't need a designer to look consistent. Canva offers drag-and-drop templates for every platform, and Adobe Express does the same with a strong mobile app for designing on the go.

Three rules keep visuals working:

  1. Pick a small brand kit and stick to it. Use the same two or three colors and one or two fonts on every post so people recognize you before they read your name.
  2. Make text overlays big and short. Most people watch on a phone, often without sound, so the key line should read in a glance and stay clear of the platform's buttons.
  3. Show the thing. Product close-ups, screen recordings and POV shots beat stock photos. In Revid's TikTok data, POV videos had a 107K median against 48K for selfie-style footage.

Repurposing saves the most time. One blog post becomes a quote graphic, a carousel and a short video, and a long video can be cut into short clips for Reels, TikTok and Shorts.

Prompt to try

Create episode 1 of a weekly "Tool Tuesday" series for small business owners: a 40-second vertical video that opens with "This free tool saved us 5 hours this week." Use screen-recording-style visuals, an upbeat voice-over and bold captions, and close by teasing next Tuesday's tool so viewers follow.

Run it in Revid

Step 7: Build a system you can keep up with

Engaging content comes from a repeatable system more than from one-off ideas. You need four parts.

  1. Content pillars. Choose a handful of themes your audience cares about. A fitness brand might use workouts, recipes and member stories. Every post belongs to one pillar.
  2. Batching. Make a week of posts for one pillar in a single session: write all the hooks, then film or generate, then edit. Switching tasks less means more output.
  3. A calendar with open slots. Plan most posts ahead, but leave room for trends. Meta said same-day posts made up more than 30% of recommended Reels in Q1 2026, so timely posts get a real share of distribution. Check TikTok trends today when you fill those slots.
  4. Series. A recurring format ("Tool Tuesday", "Fixing your landing page, part 3") gives people a reason to follow and come back. YouTube now lets you organize Shorts into seasons and episodes.
How to Schedule Social Media Posts - 4 Tips

When more than one person makes content, put the workflow in a project management tool like Asana and write a one-page voice guide so posts sound like the same brand. Evergreen Feed's guide to creating a social media plan covers the planning side in more detail, and our guide to a winning social media content strategy walks through pillars and goals.

Keep promotion in proportion. Most posts should teach, entertain or prove something. Sales posts work better when the audience already trusts you.

Track the signals near the top of the ladder: each step up shows more intent and sits closer to revenue.

Step 8: Measure what converts, not vanity metrics

Follower counts and likes feel good but say little about revenue. Track the signals that sit higher on the engagement ladder.

MetricWhat it tells youWhere to find it
SavesThe post is useful enough to come back toInstagram insights, TikTok Studio
SharesPeople vouch for you to their friendsNative analytics on every platform
Comments and repliesThe post started a conversationNative analytics
Link clicksInterest turned into a visitPlatform analytics plus UTM-tagged links
DMs and leadsBuying intentInbox, lead forms, CRM
ConversionsRevenue from socialYour store or CRM, via UTM tags

Tag every link with UTM parameters so your website analytics shows which post sent each visitor. Then connect those visits to deals in a CRM such as Salesforce to see which content brings customers, not just traffic.

Test one variable at a time. Instagram's trial reels show a reel first to non-followers without affecting your standard reels. They need a public account with at least 200 followers for professional accounts or 1,000 for personal ones. On YouTube, Test & Compare can A/B test up to 3 titles and thumbnails on long videos (Shorts aren't eligible). For timing, TikTok Studio's Viewers tab shows when your viewers were most active over the last 7 days.

Review monthly: list your top posts by saves, shares and clicks, find what they share (format, hook, pillar), and make more of that.

How to make engaging short videos with Revid

Short video is the format most of these steps point to, and it is what Revid makes. Revid starts from what audiences already watch, not from a blank page.

  1. Search Revid's library of about 2.77 million short-form videos with their engagement data and open one in your niche. A free deep analysis (up to 60 a day) explains its hook, structure and why it worked.
  2. Use repurpose viral videos and choose "Make it about your topic" to apply that hook style and pacing to your own subject, with a new script and new visuals.
  3. Or start from an idea, a script or a link in the AI video generator. Revid writes the script, builds the scenes and adds a voice-over in 70+ languages, synced captions and music.
  4. Fix anything in the timeline editor, then publish or schedule to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube from one queue. Each post reports its views, likes and comments, and you can remix a winner in one click.

FAQ

What type of content gets the most engagement on social media?

In Revid's TikTok data, challenges (182K median views) and comedy (155K) performed best, ahead of reactions, dance, storytelling and tutorials. On every platform, content that makes people feel something strong or teaches something they can use right away gets the most shares and saves.

How do you make content engaging without showing your face?

Use screen recordings, product close-ups, POV shots or AI visuals with a voice-over. In Revid's analysis, faceless TikToks had a 114K median against 67K for one person on camera, and faceless tutorials beat on-camera tutorials 156K to 52K.

How many hashtags should you use on social media?

Use a few specific ones: on TikTok, posts with 3 to 4 hashtags had the best median views in Revid's data, and 9 or more did far worse. Instagram allows up to 5 hashtags per post.

Does AI-generated content hurt engagement?

Not by itself. TikTok says turning on its AI-generated label doesn't affect distribution, and YouTube says disclosure alone doesn't limit reach. What hurts is generic, mass-produced content: 50% of Gen Z in Sprout Social's March 2026 research had blocked or unfollowed accounts over "AI slop".

What is a good engagement rate on social media?

It depends on the platform. Socialinsider's 2026 study found average engagement rates by followers of 2.60% on TikTok, 0.45% on Instagram Reels and 0.30% on YouTube Shorts, so compare yourself with your own platform's average, not a single number.
