What Is the Best Video Length? Sweet Spots for Every Platform (2026)

The best video length per platform, the hard limits that change reach and pay, and what Revid's TikTok data says about whether length matters at all.

We Cracked the Code: The Perfect AI Video Length for Each Platform
On this page

The best video length is the shortest one that delivers your whole idea. Good starting points are 16 to 30 seconds on TikTok, 15 to 30 seconds on Instagram Reels, about 45 seconds on YouTube Shorts and about 1 minute on Facebook. Go past 1 minute when the content holds attention or when a payout rule requires it.

Length on its own matters less than most guides claim. In Revid's analysis of 176,367 TikToks with 1,000+ likes posted between October 2025 and October 2026, every length bucket from under 15 seconds to 10 minutes landed between 58K and 76K median views. The common mistake is cutting a strong video down to hit a number, or padding a thin one to reach it.

Best video length by platform

Use the "start at" column for your first tests. The last column shows the lengths where a platform's rules change. Those limits matter more than any sweet spot.

PlatformStart atMaximum lengthLength where the rules change
TikTok16 to 30 seconds60 minutes uploaded (10 minutes in the in-app camera)Only videos of 1 minute or more earn Creator Rewards
Instagram Reels15 to 30 seconds20 minutesReels over 3 minutes are not recommended to non-followers
YouTube ShortsAbout 45 seconds3 minutes (square or vertical)Shorts over 1 minute with a Content ID claim are blocked

Three of these thresholds fall between 1 and 3 minutes. They decide whether a video can earn money, reach new viewers or stay online.

Make a 25-second vertical TikTok on the one habit that makes coffee taste bitter. Open with the hook "You're ruining your coffee before you even brew it," show the fix in three quick scenes, and end with a before/after taste reveal. Use fast cuts, bold synced captions and an upbeat music bed.

What is the best TikTok video length?

Start at 16 to 30 seconds. Move to 1 minute or more once you have a story that holds attention or you want Creator Rewards income.

Revid has two samples, and they agree on less than you might expect. Across Revid's full index of about 2.39 million TikToks with 1,000+ likes (all posting dates, published on our short-form video statistics page), 16 to 30 second videos had the highest median views, about 141K. They were ahead of 31 to 60 seconds (120K), under 15 seconds (106K) and 61 to 90 seconds (102K). In the 12-month study of 176,367 TikToks posted from October 2025 to October 2026, the gaps almost disappear: every bucket sits between 58K and 76K, and 61 to 90 seconds is slightly ahead at 70K. Videos under 15 seconds had the lowest median (58K) but the most shares per view, at 1.41 per 100 views. The full method is in our study of what makes a TikTok go viral. Both samples only include TikToks that already reached 1,000+ likes, so they show what successful videos have in common, not what causes success.

Length alone barely moves views: every bucket lands between 58K and 76K median views (the 790 videos over 10 minutes are a small, unusual group). Clips under 15 seconds get shared the most per view.

The most viral TikToks still run short. The median length of a TikTok with more than 100 million views is 22 seconds, and 59% of them run 30 seconds or less, according to Revid's 100M Club analysis.

Use these rules to choose a length:

  • One tip, joke or reveal: 7 to 15 seconds. Short clips get shared and rewatched, which suits punchlines and before/after reveals.
  • A tip with context, a product demo or a mini story: 16 to 30 seconds. This is the default.
  • A story, tutorial or series episode: 1 minute or more. Only videos at least one minute long count for the TikTok Creator Rewards Program, which also requires 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days.

How long should Instagram Reels be?

Start at 15 to 30 seconds for tutorials, product reviews and day-in-the-life clips, and keep anything meant for new viewers under 3 minutes. Instagram lets you record and edit Reels up to 20 minutes long, but it does not recommend Reels over 3 minutes to non-followers. A 4-minute Reel only reaches the people who already follow you.

Audience preference points the same way. In Sprout Social's 2026 Content Strategy Report, 52% of social media users said they are most likely to interact with short-form video under 60 seconds on Instagram, while only 19% favor videos longer than 60 seconds. For the full breakdown of limits, trial reels and formats, see our guide to Instagram Reels length.

How long should a YouTube Short be?

About 45 seconds is a strong default. It leaves room for a hook, the payoff and a call to action. A simple structure is three 15-second blocks:

  1. Hook and problem.
  2. Solution or main content.
  3. Example and call to action.

Shorts can run up to 3 minutes for square or vertical videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. The catch is copyright: any Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim is blocked globally and cannot be monetized (YouTube Help). Most Shorts Audio Library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short, though some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.

For regular videos, the right length depends on the topic and the watch time you can hold. Our guide to the best YouTube video length covers that side.

How long should Facebook, LinkedIn and X videos be?

Facebook: start at about 1 minute. Since June 2025, every new Facebook video is shared as a reel, with no length or format restrictions. Put your best material in the first 15 seconds, because that is where viewers decide to stay. Length will not save unoriginal content: since March 2026, Facebook deprioritizes reaction-only, clip-stitching and lightly edited reposts.

LinkedIn: videos can run up to 15 minutes. LinkedIn's full-screen vertical feed is mobile-only, and any video you post can appear there based on relevance and performance. Short, vertical explainers fit that feed best.

X: non-Premium accounts can post videos up to 20 minutes, and Premium accounts up to 125 minutes. On a text-first timeline, keep clips tight and make the first frame readable without sound.

How to choose the right length for one video

Platform averages are a starting point. The right length for a given video comes from its content:

  • If the idea fits in one sentence, make it 7 to 15 seconds. Adding time only adds places to swipe away.
  • If the payoff needs setup, give it 16 to 45 seconds and show the end result in the first 3 seconds so viewers know it is coming.
  • If you are teaching steps, use one step per beat and cut every pause. If it runs past 90 seconds, split it into a series.
  • If you are chasing payouts, meet the platform's minimum (1 minute for TikTok Creator Rewards) without padding. Viewers who leave early hurt you more than the extra length helps.
  • If you use claimed music on Shorts, stay under 1 minute.

Two habits work on every platform. First, win the opening: your first 3 seconds decide whether anyone sees the rest, so start from a proven pattern in our list of TikTok hooks. Second, follow the 80/20 rule: put 80% of your message in the first 20% of the video. Viewers who leave halfway should still get the point.

Short videos also keep more of their audience. Vidyard's business video benchmarks found that 65% of viewers stay to the end of a business video under 1 minute, against 20% for videos over 20 minutes.

How to test your video length

Averages describe millions of videos, not your audience. Run this test:

  1. Make three cuts of the same idea: super short (7 to 15 seconds), medium (16 to 30 seconds) and long (45 to 60 seconds). Keep the same hook in all three.
  2. Change only the length. Post on the same day of the week, at a similar time, with the same hashtags and caption.
  3. Compare the right metrics: average watch time, percentage watched, shares, saves and follows per view. Raw views alone mislead you.
  4. Repeat with three or four ideas before you settle on a default. One test is noise.

On TikTok, these numbers live in TikTok Studio (profile > menu > TikTok Studio > Analytics). Set the date range to 7 or 28 days. To see which of your past videos already worked and how long they ran, run a free TikTok account audit.

Make videos at the right length with Revid

Testing lengths means making the same video three times, which is where Revid saves the most time.

  1. Paste a script, an idea or a link into the AI TikTok Video Generator. Use the AI Reel Generator or AI YouTube Shorts Generator for the other platforms.
  2. Revid writes the script and builds the video: scene-by-scene visuals, a voice-over in 70+ languages, synced captions and music.
  3. In the timeline editor, trim or cut scenes to make your short, medium and long versions.
  4. Publish or schedule all three to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube from one queue. Each post reports its views, likes and comments, so you can compare the cuts.

FAQ

Is it better to post short or long videos on TikTok?

Neither wins on views alone. In Revid's 12-month study, median views barely changed with length (58K to 76K across buckets). Shorter clips earned more shares per view, and only videos of 1 minute or more can earn Creator Rewards.

What is the maximum length of a TikTok video?

Uploads can be up to 60 minutes long. Videos recorded with the in-app camera are limited to 10 minutes.

Can a YouTube Short be 3 minutes long?

Yes. Square or vertical videos up to 3 minutes long uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 count as Shorts. Keep any Short with a Content ID claim under 1 minute, or YouTube blocks it.

What is the maximum length of an Instagram Reel?

Reels can be up to 20 minutes long. Instagram only recommends Reels of 3 minutes or less to people who don't follow you.

Does video length affect the algorithm?

Indirectly. Platforms reward videos people watch, rewatch and share, and a length that matches the content helps all three. The hard rules are the thresholds: 3 minutes for Reels reach, and 1 minute for TikTok Creator Rewards and claimed Shorts.
