Copyright-Free Music for Social Media: Where to Find It in 2026
Royalty-free does not mean copyright-free. These are the free music libraries that are safe for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube, and how to check a track's license before you post.

On this page
The safest copyright-free music for social media comes from free libraries that license tracks for video use: YouTube Audio Library, Pixabay Music, Mixkit, Free Music Archive, Incompetech and Bensound, plus Meta's Sound Collection for Facebook and Instagram. Before you post, check two things in each track's license: whether you must credit the artist, and whether commercial use is allowed.
The most common mistake is treating "royalty-free" as "copyright-free". Almost every track on these sites is still owned by someone. What you get is a license to use it, with conditions. Break a condition, or use a popular song with a credit line in your caption, and the platform can mute the audio, block the video or strike the account. On YouTube, any Short longer than one minute with an active Content ID claim is blocked worldwide and can't be monetized.

Which music is copyright free?
Four kinds of music are safe to use in social videos, each with its own rules.
| Type | What it means | What you must do |
|---|---|---|
| Public domain | The copyright has expired or was given up | Nothing, but the recording must be public domain too, not only the composition |
| Creative Commons | The artist allows reuse under set conditions | Follow the license: credit (BY), no commercial use (NC), no edits (ND) |
| Royalty-free | You get a license once (free or paid) and reuse the track with no per-use fees | Read the license: credit and commercial rules vary by site |
| Platform-licensed | The app licensed the song for use inside that app | Use it only in that app, through its own music picker |
Two traps catch most people. A Beethoven symphony is public domain, but a specific orchestra's recording of it usually isn't: use a recording marked public domain or record it yourself. And Creative Commons NC (non-commercial) tracks are off limits for ads, sponsored posts and brand accounts that sell something.

Where to find copyright-free music: the best free sites
All of these are free to start. The difference is in the credit and commercial-use rules.
| Site | Best for | Credit required | Where you can use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Audio Library | YouTube videos and Shorts | Only on tracks marked for attribution | YouTube, including monetized videos; check the terms before using elsewhere |
| Meta Sound Collection | Facebook and Instagram | No | Videos shared on Facebook and Instagram only |
| Free Music Archive | Indie and unusual tracks | Depends on each track's license | Depends on each track's license |
| SoundCloud | Discovering independent artists | Depends on the artist | Only Creative Commons tracks or with written permission |
| Incompetech | Background music | Yes, on the free license | Online videos on any platform |
| Bensound | Polished short-form tracks | Yes, on free downloads | Online videos; paid license for ads or no credit |
| Pixabay Music | Free tracks with no credit | No | Any platform, including commercial use |
| Mixkit | Free tracks with no credit | No | Any platform, under the Mixkit license |
If you post the same video on several platforms, pick from Pixabay, Mixkit, Incompetech or Bensound. If you post only on one app, its own library is the lowest-risk choice.
YouTube Audio Library

The YouTube Audio Library is YouTube's free collection of music and sound effects, inside YouTube Studio. Filter by genre, mood, duration or license type. The license column tells you whether a track needs attribution and gives the exact credit text to paste into your description. Tracks are cleared for monetized YouTube videos; read the Audio Library terms before reusing one on TikTok or Instagram.
Shorts have their own audio picker. According to YouTube's help page on three-minute Shorts, most Shorts Audio Library songs can be used for up to 90 seconds in a 3-minute Short, and some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds.
Meta Sound Collection (Facebook Sound Collection)

The Facebook Sound Collection is Meta's free library of music and sound effects. Log in with a Facebook account, browse by genre or mood, and download. Because Meta licenses the tracks, it is the safest source for Facebook and Instagram videos. The catch: the license covers videos you share on Facebook and Instagram, so don't reuse these tracks on YouTube or TikTok.
Free Music Archive (FMA)

The Free Music Archive, run by Tribe of Noise, has two sides: a free archive of independent artists, where each track carries its own license (often Creative Commons), and a paid royalty-free catalog. Open the track page and read its license before downloading. Skip NC tracks for anything promotional, and copy the credit line for BY tracks.
SoundCloud

SoundCloud is not a free music library. Most tracks are fully copyrighted. It is useful for finding independent artists, some of whom release tracks under Creative Commons or say on the track page that creators can use them. If the page doesn't say so, message the artist and get permission in writing before you use the track.
Incompetech

Incompetech is composer Kevin MacLeod's library. Tracks are free under a Creative Commons Attribution license as long as you credit him; a paid license removes the credit requirement. The music is safe and varied, but it is so widely used on YouTube that viewers may recognize it.
Bensound

Bensound offers free tracks you can use with credit, and paid licenses for ads or for using the music without credit. The catalog leans polished: pop, corporate, electronic and acoustic tracks that suit product videos and short promos.
Pixabay Music

Pixabay Music is free for personal and commercial use under the Pixabay Content License, with no credit required. Search by mood, genre or length and download. Keep the track's page link: if a claim ever shows up, the license page is what you dispute it with.
Mixkit

Mixkit offers free stock music under its own license, with no attribution required. Browse by genre, mood or tag. The page also advertises Envato's paid subscription; the Mixkit tracks themselves are free. Read the license once so you know what it excludes.
How to find royalty-free music on Instagram
Instagram's built-in music is licensed, not copyright-free, and what you see depends on your account type.
- Personal and creator accounts: tap the music option in the Reels editor. These songs are licensed for use inside Instagram, so they are safe there, but availability varies by country and the license does not follow the video to other apps.
- Business accounts: the music picker is limited to a licensed library of tracks cleared for commercial use. If a popular song is missing, that's why. Use those tracks or upload a video that already has a royalty-free track.
- Uploading your own edit: add a track from Meta's Sound Collection, Pixabay or Mixkit before you upload. This is the only route that also works when you cross-post the same file.
There is no filter labeled "copyright free" in the app. For non-copyrighted music on Instagram, the business library and Meta's Sound Collection are the closest thing.
Where to find royalty-free music for Facebook videos
Since a June 2025 change, every new Facebook video is shared as a reel. That gives you two safe sources: the music picker in the Facebook reels editor, and Meta's Sound Collection for tracks you add while editing. Pages that promote a business should stick to tracks cleared for commercial use, the same rule as Instagram business accounts.
The index leans toward videos that surface in hashtag and keyword searches, so its view counts run high: compare the groups, not the absolute numbers.

How to find royalty-free music on TikTok
- Personal accounts: songs in TikTok's sound library are licensed for use in TikTok videos. To see what's trending, check this list of viral TikTok songs right now and use them through the app, not as a downloaded file.
- Business accounts: use TikTok's Commercial Music Library, the set of tracks cleared for commercial use on TikTok. Mainstream hits are generally not available to business accounts.
- Uploading your own edit: use a royalty-free track from the list above if the video will also go to Reels or YouTube.
If you earn through the Creator Rewards Program, music matters for payouts too. TikTok's Creator Rewards Program rules say videos with lip syncs or copyrighted music playing for over one minute are not considered original. For the editing side, see how to make a TikTok video with music.
How to find copyright-free music for YouTube
Start with the YouTube Audio Library for long videos and the Shorts audio picker for Shorts. Both are cleared for monetized videos. Then know the rules that cause most problems:
- A Short longer than one minute with any active Content ID claim is blocked globally and can't be monetized. Trim the Short or swap the track.
- Using a track from the Shorts library does not cut your 45% share of your Shorts revenue allocation. Music only shrinks the overall Creator Pool (with one track, half of that Short's revenue goes to the pool).
- If a claim lands on a track you licensed from a royalty-free site, dispute it in YouTube Studio and attach the license page.
Prompt to try
Make a 30-second vertical explainer titled "3 places to get free music that won't get your Reel muted". Open with the hook "Your video got muted? Here's why." then cover Pixabay Music, Mixkit and Meta's Sound Collection, one scene each, in a clean motion graphics style with calm background music under the voice.
How to check a track before you post
- Read the license on the track page, not the site's homepage. Licenses can differ track by track.
- Copy the credit text if attribution is required, and paste it in your caption or description.
- Check commercial use if the video is an ad, a sponsored post or for a brand account. Skip NC tracks.
- Check where the license applies. Platform libraries (Meta, TikTok, YouTube Shorts) only cover their own app.
- Save proof: a screenshot or link of the license and download page, in case of a claim.
- Mix the music under the voice. Keep it clearly quieter than speech so captions and narration carry the video. Most social media video editors let you lower a music track's volume in one step.
Add music to your video with Revid
If you don't want to assemble the video by hand, Revid's social media video maker builds a complete short from an idea, a script or a link: script, visuals, AI voice-over, synced captions and music. You can adjust any scene in the timeline editor and export up to 4K.
If you already have a track you're allowed to use, such as your own song or a licensed download, the AI music video generator turns an MP3, WAV or Suno link into a beat-synced video. When it's ready, you can publish to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube from one queue. Working from photos instead? Here is how to make a video with photos and music.

FAQ
Can I use a popular song if I credit the artist?
No. A credit is not a license, so a popular song used without permission can still be muted, blocked or claimed. Use the platform's own music picker for that app, or pick a track from a royalty-free library.
What happens if I use copyrighted music on social media?
The platform can mute the audio, block the video in some or all countries, remove it, or apply a copyright strike to the account. On YouTube, a Content ID claim can also send the video's ad revenue to the rights holder.
How do I find royalty-free music on SoundCloud?
Look for tracks whose page states a Creative Commons license, or where the artist explicitly allows creators to use them. For anything else, ask the artist and get written permission before you post.
Can I use Instagram or TikTok sounds on other platforms?
No. Songs from in-app libraries are licensed for use inside that app only. If you download a video and repost it elsewhere, the track can be muted or claimed, so use a royalty-free track for cross-posted videos.
Do I need to credit royalty-free music?
It depends on the license. Pixabay, Mixkit and Meta's Sound Collection don't require credit, while Incompetech and Bensound's free tracks do, and Creative Commons BY tracks always do.
